In south of good by Randall Reneau, Hardin Steel (aka: Stainless) is the sheriff of Cameron County, which is near the Mexico - Texas border.  Sheriff Steel is no stranger to drug busts, but things quickly head south when his buddy, Wes, bites off more than he can chew.  Against their better judgment, they find themselves pursuing a major drug lord into foreign waters.  The rest of the story leaves the reader guessing what's going to happen next and who is a "good guy".  Wes and Stainless are left wondering if they are ever going to be free from looking over their shoulders.

The book starts off slow, but picks up as the plot thickens and more twists are added.  It is almost impossible to predict what is going to happen, because as soon as you think you know how things are going to turn out, Reneau throws a curve ball and changes everything.  The ending was completely unpredictable.

There are few errors throughout the book, but I would suggest reformatting the paragraphs to make it read easier.  I enjoyed that Reneau provided "behind the scenes" narrative to shed light on what was taking place with other characters in the story.  It adds suspense knowing that both sides are planning their own devious acts and not knowing who's plan is going to work out.

Overall, south of good has earned 4 out of 4 stars.  I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a little action and excitement!
